A question I tend to get frequently is, “How do I accessorize?” I get it. It can be overwhelming! I tell my clients that one (semi-)simple way to accessorize is with jewelry. Going one extra step and layering jewelry makes your outfit even more interesting, and makes your jewelry more versatile. You get more bang for your buck!
I teamed up with Chicago jewelry designer Tania Rodamilans to show you some different ways to layer necklaces for some outfit inspiration! All the jewelry shown is by Tania and the clothes are from Milk Handmade, a boutique in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago.
When layering necklaces is to use necklaces that vary in length. In this example, the necklace with the white stones is the “star” and the shorter necklace is a complement. If the necklaces were the same length, they’d get all tangled and they’d be competing for attention!
If the necklaces aren’t big and chunky, add drop earrings that complement the necklaces. Here, Ange’s earrings match the white stone in her necklace.
If you’re unsure about whether 2 necklaces look right together, ask yourself if they have a common metal or color. In this example, both pendants are brass.
Because the pendants are in the same color family, the necklaces complement one another even though the shorter necklace has a silver chain, and the longer necklace has a brass chain. It’s ok to mix metals!
A shirt with a high neckline is a great backdrop for layering necklaces because the shirt won’t compete with the jewelry. Have you ever tried to put on a long necklace with a button down shirt? It doesn’t work too well. A high neckline provides the perfect canvas for necklaces.
If you want your bracelet or watch to show with a long sleeved shirt, wear the bracelet on the outside of your sleeve!
