I was recently introduced to today’s CoChic Cool Chick Kat Visnevska through our mutual friend Darcy. I was so intrigued by Kat’s business because it is unlike any of my other friends’ businesses and/or careers. Kat is a DJ and electric violinist. And sometimes she does both simultaneously. Singing and tapping my foot simultaneously is an impossible feat for me, so to say I am impressed by her talent is quite the understatement. I had the pleasure of seeing Kat in action a couple weeks ago at Roof on the Wit, and I seriously haven’t danced that much on a weeknight since college. You can’t help but be totally entranced by the way she plays her violin to the beat of whatever the DJ is playing, without knowing what songs he’s going to play beforehand. You have to see it get the full effect! Luckily, Kat plays all over the country so you can go check her out. Read on to find out more about Kat’s business and career as a musician, and you’ll love her quirky sense of humor and wit that come out in her answers.
If you are new to CoChic Cool Chicks, every Monday I feature a woman entrepreneur who inspires me, who I am lucky enough to have in my girl boss network. These women are doing great things and whether you aspire to be an entrepreneur or not, I hope that they inspire you to do great things, too. I encourage you to check out their businesses, websites, and social media. And reach out to them, ask them questions, say hello. They’d love to hear from you!
Tell us about your business.
I’m a music fairy (formerly a unicorn)…kidding…maybe?! When I’m KAT V, I DJ and play electric violin simultaneously. I love creating ambiance for the space or the event I am curating. My range is diverse, from ambient sounds to dance sets i sprinkle electric violin on top! Check out my site: www.vipviolin.com. And here’s a DJ mix I made: https://soundcloud.com/vipviolin/deep-chill-fall-disco-2015
How is your business different from others in the industry?
I’m truly committed to one of a kind experience. Each set is built for that particular moment, when I add electric violin it is an improvisation, never the same. My goal is to exceed the client’s expectations every time.
When did you start playing violin and how did you decide to start a career in music?
I was introduced to classical violin at the ripe age of 5; my family hoped for me to become a classical musician, following in their footsteps, but I had other plans. 😉
What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?
I love that I am fully responsible for my schedule and can push myself as hard or as little as I feel is necessary.
What is the most challenging thing about being an entrepreneur?
I think in the entertainment industry (and this probably applies to most industries), thinking ahead is crucial, setting the standards for your industry by finding your own voice/talent and narrowing your focus. There are so many options and often it is about making the right choice. I think the success is defined by a mix of talent, industry needs and luck.
What is your best piece of business advice?
Listen to your inner voice and if you are on the right track the universe will send you signals, you will see unicorns somewhere along the way. 🙂 Also find space for personal growth, something as simple as learning how to cook a new dish or taking up a new work out regimen may lead you in a new entrepreneurial direction and translate into your continued success. Awareness is key!
Do you have any tricks of the trade you could share with us?
I like to surprise my clients with a very quick reply to their inquiries or projects. I love hearing, “That was fast!” Sometimes the first idea is the best one.
How would you describe your personal style?
Ahhh that changes daily! I’m always looking for new fun things to wear for my performances. If you have suggestions or designers I should check out please send me a message at
katarina@vipviolin.com or tag me on Instagram @vipviolin. Music and fashion go hand in hand. I am telling the story when I play the violin and DJ. I want to build the energy with my performance and the right outfit enhances the experience for the audience. That often proves to be a task, but somehow I always manage to find the right thing for the show even if it means I have to shop in my own closet! 🙁
What does being CoChic (comfortably chic) mean to you?
EVERYTHING! If I’m not comfortable I will not be focusing on the music and if I’m not chic I won’t be able to sparkle while I perform….so sneaker wedges it is, ladies!
Anything else you’d like to share?
I would like to encourage us all to speak the truth. Often it is difficult for one reason or another, however if you surround yourself with the right people they will only want to hear your truth. Thank you for allowing me to contribute to your lovely blog.
